How to treat a tradesperson in your home?

Chances are we will all need a tradesperson to visit our home at some point. But is there a code of conduct on how they should be treated by customers?

Of course, Safe Local Trades would expect our members to be met with respect and professionalism – with them extending that very same courtesy to the customer.

However, like all relationships, there’s a potential for hiccups if they’re not handled properly from the beginning.

So, we have a few pointers on customer and tradesperson etiquette to help promote the best working relationship possible and to avoid any awkward moments.

  • We know that our traders are super careful and considerate when they visit customers, but there is something you can do right from the outset to limit any potential damage or mishaps. None of our traders want to feel the pressure of tip toeing around valuables or precious items whilst they are working so it may be a good idea to clear the room they are working in before they arrive. A clear room also makes it easier to work in. Whilst precautions are taken against covering your belongings and furniture in dust, remove or cover anything less obvious that you don’t want to risk getting dirty.
  • As with any guest in your home – always be welcoming. They may ask if you would like them to remove their boots or shoes, but if their footwear is particularly wet or muddy, don’t be afraid to politely ask them.
  • Even if they are there to do a job, a friendly greeting costs nothing and an offer of a cup of tea, cold drink or even a biscuit will be gratefully received – and great to disperse any awkwardness.
  • Try not to micromanage! If you want to check the work – then wait until the tradesperson has finished rather that sit and watch them – it can be very unnerving having someone look over your shoulder. It is always a good idea to check their profile, portfolio and photo gallery on www.safelocaltrades.com before making contact to check out their work and reviews beforehand.
  • Always get a price for the work before a start date is agreed and make firm payment arrangements with the tradesperson, getting that information in writing and honour that. Being paid on time is the most respectful way to treat your tradesperson and don’t haggle the cost after the work is completed.

If you do have any issues with the quality of work, then please do direct these through the proper channel – with the tradesperson themselves in the first instance or directly through Safe Local Trades.

We pride ourselves our integrity, honesty and professionalism – along with the genuine reviews of our traders.
