What’s hot on your home improvement hit list?

DO you crave more room, dream of a bathroom or bedroom make over, or maybe searching for extra space outdoors?

Whatever is hot on your home improvement list, a new poll reveals the just we have been up to behind closed doors!

A lick of paint, a new floor and a bathroom makeover top the list of work carried out by home owners in the UK in the last five years, according to a new survey commissioned by GoCompare Home Insurance.

Interestingly, some 68 per cent of work is undertaken to improve a property’s general appearance compared with essential maintenance, which accounts for just 38 per cent.
Energy efficiency improvements featured strongly in the list, including installing a new boiler or central heating system and improving insulation.

Here’s what the survey revealed about home owners:

  • Half (50 per cent) carried out interior decoration
  • 31 per cent replaced the flooring
  • A new bathroom was installed by 29 per cent
  • A quarter (25 per cent) either revamped the garden, fitted a new kitchen or installed a new boiler or heating system.
  • 21 per cent fitted new windows or double glazing
  • A new shed or garden building was on the list for 16 per cent
  • Some 13 per cent carried out exterior decoration and improved the insulation of their home
  • Only eight per cent did rewiring, an extension or a new roof.
  • There are primarily two main reasons we carry out home improvements, either on a minor or major scale; to extend our own living space and enhance or comfort or quality of life, or are preparing to sell our property and want to present it at its best.
  • Brits have splashed out more than £40 billion updating their houses since 2013. Nearly three in four (73%) homeowners have updated their home since in this time, with one in 10 admitting they have done so because of the high cost of moving.

With the improvements ranging from new doors to building a conservatory, all carried out to add value to the property, the list by a leading property website makes interesting reading.
