Chris Rutter
JC Rutter Carpentry, Joinery & Property Improvements
When you were a child what did you aspire to be?
I wanted to join the army.
Did you enjoy school?
No I was a bit dyslectic, so I was disruptive.
What motivated you to learn your trade?
I fell into electronics and hated it; but it paid the bills for 20 years. I joined the TA for 14 years and went to Iraq in 2002. On returning I decided to go back to school and study english and maths so I could do carpentry. I did this for two years, followed by a two year plumbing course.
Do you wish you had started your business earlier?
Yes, it is the best thing I have ever done!
What are the rewards of being your ‘own Boss’?
It gives me more time for holidays and time with my family. Being my own boss also means that I have never worked so hard – so I really value family holidays.
How did you support yourself financially to start your own business?
When I decided to start my business I was still working in electronics, but it was a long term thing when it was the right time for me.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about starting their own business?
Complete the relevant courses and just go for it! It takes time and a lot of hard work, but the rewards are so good – it’s the best thing I have done.
What made you decide to join Safe Local Trades?
I decided to give it a go as it was a good idea for pushing my business forward. Getting good feedback is important to me. Doing a good professional job makes me happy. I go to all meetings because free networking events, enjoying a beer and a bite to eat with lovely people – always a bonus!
How has Safe Local Trades worked for your Business? The rewards are really good - all the members are amazing. Keep up the good work everyone!
