Utility Password Scheme

Gas, water and electricity companies have a password system for older and vulnerable customers, whereby the customer can give the company a word which is confidential to them and the company.  When their representative calls, they will be expected to tell the customer the password to prove they are genuine.  Many companies offer special services to help you even more.  Please contact your gas, water and electricity suppliers, or other utility companies, to find out more or look online.

Helen O’Driscoll, Crime Reduction Officer in Peterborough rang British Gas today to check the service is still in operation but their staff were not fully aware that it was until they looked up their guide to services - they did find it eventually! Helen advises "As a British Gas customer you can update your password online under their Help & Advice section – Managing My Details".

You can contact British Gas (Home Energy Care) on 0800 072 8625 Textphone: 18001 0845 955 5202 or on their website: www.britishgas.co.uk

Anglian Water customers offer a caller identity check and a password service along with a host of other services for the hard of hearing/partially sighted.

You can contact Anglian Water on 0800 145 145 or on their website: www.anglianwater.co.uk
